93% of retail employees report that violence at work is their primary worry. Here is one step we can all take to make workplaces safer. Criminal and civil restraining orders work even if other traditional approaches do not. These orders are underutilized by some employers, some DA's, and some judges. Consistent use of criminal and civil protective and stay away orders work. Here's how and why:Many who threaten or batter retail and other employees are repeat offenders who were once satisfied with nonviolent stealing. But some now use violence and threats against employees to rob. Sometimes, in some places, arraignment Deputy DAs omit to ask for criminal stay-away and protective orders even though judges are not reluctant to give them on request. Some retailers including national brands, don’t appreciate that civil workplace violence orders can be obtained by them in one court day from the local civil court to protect their workplaces. After having done hundreds of civil orders for shopping centers, guards, retailers, and other employers, and having some police experience, I know that most violent offenders are "conwise" and for that reason they usually obey criminal and civil orders. It's not because they have become law-abiding. It's because they know that the police will contact them to investigate violations. They don't relish contact with the police. So if a civil or criminal judge orders them to stay away from a store, an employee or a shopping center, they usually comply.

OMG! Students in the crossfire?! What next - hunting crossbows with built-in scopes from Amazon? Will TN provide and cover the costs of licenses to carry concealed weapons, the training, weapons and ammunition per teacher? The goal is to provide a safe environment for learning, eliminating fear of shooters and guns, not to equip teachers with guns. #tennesseelegislature#billpassedallowingteacherstoarm#gunsinschool#schoolwarzones

With this decision, I expect that other municipalities may try to enact similar ordinances, but practically it would only be needed if there are safety concerns with people shooting guns on their own property. Also, Stroud Township had a significant amount of properties where outdoor backyard ranges would be permitted in their open space and recreational zoning districts, and more populated municipalities would need to worry about de facto exclusions. #zoning #township #landuseplanning

Theft vs burglary vs robbery - what's the difference? If I go into a shop, take a box of chocolates and conceal it in my jacket and then walk out without paying, most people will recognise that as “stealing” and hence, “theft”. But how does that differ from burglary and robbery? Read our latest blog post here to find out https://lnkd.in/dwTBuBg9#Theft #Burglary #Robbery #TheftOffences #Stealing #TheftCase

“In 2020, as the pandemic took hold and protests convulsed the nation after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis, the United States saw the largest increase in murders ever recorded. Now, as 2023 comes to a close, the country is likely to see one of the largest — if not the largest — yearly declines in homicides, according to recent F.B.I. data and statistics collected by independent criminologists and researchers. The rapid decline in homicides isn’t the only story. Among nine violent and property crime categories tracked by the F.B.I., the only figure that is up over the first three quarters of this year is motor vehicle theft. The decline in crime contrasts with perceptions, driven in part by social media videos of flash-mob-style shoplifting incidents, that urban downtowns are out of control. While figures in some categories of crime are still higher than they were before the pandemic, crime overall is falling nationwide, including in cities often singled out by politicians as plagued by danger and violence. Homicides are down by 13 percent in Chicago and by 11% in New York, where shootings are down by 25%.”https://lnkd.in/egqP2U4y
